Talks and workshops

19.03.14 A dynamic and enlightening workshop was delivered at Compass Jobs Fair, Birmingham on ‘The digital frontier of social work delivery’. Social workers joined the discussions of how much technology can help and hinder communications with service users and we all discovered the new and innovative ways that technology is helping.

15.11.13 David presented ‘The internet: protecting yourself, service users and young people’ at The British Emergency Aid to Russia and the Republics (BEARR) Trust annual conference titled “The Uses and Abuses of Social Networking for Health and Welfare NGOs in the BEARR Region” to a fantastic audience who really engaged with the changing landscape of communication and all the dangers that it brings with it.

30.04.14 At British Association of Social Workers (BASW) England Conference discussed the social workers role in policing social media – questioning whether it is just the role of parents and police to monitor the sites or if social workers can utilise public information. Excellent points were raised from the audience and a good discussion was had on the panel, specifically about media coverage of social work.

10.06.14 At BASW Annual General Meeting 2014 David was part of a panel at a workshop entitled ‘A media we love to hate’. There strong opinions shared from the audience about the image of social work presented to the masses in written and broadcast media.

23.07.14 The 2014 JSWEC conference is being held at the Royal Holloway, University of London. The Social World Podcast has been asked to produce an exclusive programme on the event. This will include excellent sound bites from delegates and speakers to share their knowledge and opinions with those who could not make the event.

JSWEC – the Joint Social Work Education and Research Conference – is a major event and showcase for all involved in social work and research. In 2013, there were nearly 200 delegates from around the globe. This year the numbers are going to exceed that of previous years with 3 keynotes, 106 papers, 32 workshops, 9 posters and 6 Fringe evens.
