The importance of media training

The media is the window on the world for 99% of the population. Whether it is broadcast, written or social, we get our information and knowledge from it and use its content to form most of our opinions.

Over the last 15-20 years I’ve managed to get a deep insight into how people use the media to their best advantage and how people respond when challenged by it. I’ve been interview numerous times on radio and television. Although I’m never complacent I now feel comfortable in the experience. As a result it occurred to me, and especially as I run a training company, that I’m sitting on a wealth of experience that I could pass on.

At David Niven Associates we are offering media training for individuals, companies or voluntary organisations who want to improve their message or promote their ideas. We will teach them how to give a good interview and feel comfortable – whether it’s talking to a journalist, giving a radio interview or being on television. We also now delighted to be able to offer podcasting experience as my own podcast ‘Thoughts on the Social World’ is proving so successful.

It’s not rocket science but it does need practice and advice about time management, the pace of delivery, the content and preparation  – all things that can be easily improved.

We can pass on how to write an effective press release when an even you want to promote is coming up. We’ll talk about how to form good working relationships with working journalists.

It’s really all about demystifying a process that some find challenging. But when understood and practised can be so effective in communicating your message.

We will also touch on the issues of reputation management and how to work with the media in a crisis – this is not a common event but just like preparing for fire, flood or natural disaster it makes sense to have thought it through and have a plan of action.

Taking it one step further, we have also created media plans for companies so that everybody knows what to do when contacted, what information they personally are able to share and who in the company is most able and best placed to deal with the media.

There’s a lot of people who have benefited from this, as well as many who believe they are able to deal with this without any thought or practice. Some indeed may have a natural gift and confidence but again, like many skills in life, preparation and practice can be extremely effective.
